Renfield is a horror comedy about a man who falls in love with the monster he was paid to hunt. It is an original story by writer/director Chris McKay and producer/writer Ryan Ridley. It stars Nicholas Hoult and is scheduled for release on April 14, 2023.
When a group of scientists hunting a legendary monster in the Amazon is captured by the beast, their only hope is a team of mercenaries who were paid to kill it. With no way to escape and the monster closing in, the team must fight for their lives and figure out how to bring down the beast.

Universal Studios, the parent company of the Universal Pictures studio that makes most of the films based on the Dark Universe, announced in July 2014 that it plans to reboot the classic monsters franchise that includes characters like Dracula and Frankenstein, and to do so as a shared universe with films under the umbrella title of the Dark Universe.
It’s been widely reported that after the release of Dracula Untold, Universal Pictures downplayed their connections to the shared universe, and The Mummy was re-positioned as the first film in the franchise. 2017’s The Mummy was a major disappointment for Universal. In November 2019, Dexter Fletcher was hired to direct the movie adaptation of Daniel Clowes’ comic book series ‘Renfield’ for Universal and Skybound Entertainment. This is based on an original pitch by Robert Kirkman. The film was described as a comedic approach to the world of Count Dracula, with similarities to Taika Waititi’s vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, and a major focus on the titular character. Leigh Whannell’s 2020 horror movie, The Invisible Man, was a massive commercial and critical success. It served as a relaunch to Universal’s monster universe.
Chris McKay has been in talks to become a director at 20th Century Fox after Fletcher left to join the new reboot of The Saint. When the story of the young man who wanted to impress his girlfriend at a costume party in New York City was pitched, they wanted to see if he could use humor and action to create a great story that the audience would enjoy.

Nicholas Hoult was cast as the title character in the live-action movie, with filming scheduled to begin that month. Nic Cage is playing Count Dracula and will be joined by his Awkwafina and Ben Schwartz. One security guard was on duty the night of the incident, which took place late at night in a secured parking lot.
