The movie is slated to hit theatres on December 21, 2022. It was initially scheduled to be released on November 2, 2018, and then later on December 21, 2018, before being withdrawn from the release schedule in January 2015 due to corporate restructuring and DreamWorks Animation’s new policy to release just two films a year. On September 23, 2022, the project’s release date was set when it was revived. But in April 2022, it was modified to the current date of December 21.
The first 30 minutes of the film were shown on June 14, 2022, at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. Asserting that Puss’s “fear of death is the engine that drives the movie,” director Joel Crawford concurred that the movie had a darker tone than its predecessor.
