The American biographical film Oppenheimer, which will be written and directed by Christopher Nolan, is based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s American Prometheus, a biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The movie is a collaboration between Syncopy Inc. and Atlas Entertainment, and Nolan, along with Emma Thomas and Charles Roven, is a producer of Oppenheimer’s movie. Theoretical physicist Oppenheimer is among those recognized as being the “father of the atomic bomb” for his involvement in the Manhattan Project, the World War II initiative that produced the first nuclear weapons.

The release date of Oppenheimer:

The movie is slated for release by Universal Pictures on July 21, 2023, in the United States. Due to conflicts about the studio’s simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max distribution plan for its 2021 slate, it is Nolan’s first movie not to be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures since Memento (2000). Universal Pictures plans to distribute it in IMAX, 70mm, and 35mm. Variety estimates that the movie will need to earn at least $400 million globally to break even, taking into account the budget and marketing expenses.

Plot:

The movie is a story of a theoretical physicist and father of the atomic bomb J. Robert (Cillian Murphy), who worked on the World War II Manhattan Project that resulted in the creation of the first nuclear weapons, and who subsequently had to deal with the ethical implications of technological advancement, based on J. Robert’s book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy, which won the Pulitzer Prize.

The narrative of “the father of the atomic bomb” will be told in the film. J. Robert oversaw the Los Alamos Laboratory of the Manhattan Project, which resulted in the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II. (Nolan’s most recent movie with a WWII setting, Dunkirk from 2017, received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Directing, and took home three.)

The Filming of Oppenheimer:

 Filming at the University of California, Berkeley took place in May 2022.

The search for performers for a two-day casting call in Santa Fe and Los Alamos for the parts of villagers, soldiers, and scientists had already begun in New Mexico by January 2022. A second casting call took place in February. As a cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema started shooting in late February 2022. The second week of April saw filming in Princeton, New Jersey’s Institute for Advanced Study.

The movie combines large-format 65mm and IMAX 65mm film. Additionally, it is the first movie to use analog IMAX black and white photography for some scenes. In May, Gary Oldman stated he would spend a day on-site working on “one scene, a page and a half.” Additionally, scenes were filmed in California, mainly in the Berkeley area of the University of California.  In May 2022, the four-month shoot came to an end. 

Jennifer Lame will finish the editing during post-production, while Ludwig Göransson will write the musical score; they previously worked together on Tenet’s editing and soundtrack, respectively.
