Greet Barbie and Ken:

For such a live-action “Barbie” universe, praise be to the casting gods. Ryan Gosling will co-star as the title character Ken and Margot Robbie will serve as the film’s producer. We already know Robbie can pull off an all-pink ensemble in the purported premise of Barbie fleeing her doll fantasy world only to find herself overwhelmed with reality if the actress’s “Wolf of Wall Street” clothing is any indicator of the Barbie-verse.
With “I, Tonya,” Robbie made her producing debut. She also served as executive producer for “Dollface” on Hulu and “Maid” on Netflix. The critically acclaimed #MeToo revenge comedy-drama “Promising Young Woman” and the Harley Quinn movie “Birds of Prey” were both produced by Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment firm.
As of February 2021, “Barbie” is still in pre-production.

Sony Pictures originally started working on the movie in 2014. Sony’s option expired, and the rights were given to Warner Bros. Pictures after several changes to the writer and director as well as the choice of two different actresses to portray the titular role. When it was revealed that Mattel had partnered with Universal Pictures to make the movie and that Laurence Mark would serve as producer, the development of a movie based on the Barbie doll line got underway in September 2009. However, this relationship did not come to fruition. To create the movie, Mattel partnered with Sony Pictures in April 2014. Jenny Bicks would write the script, while Laurie Macdonald and Walter F. Parkes would serve as producers under their Parkes MacDonald Image Nation label. At the time, it was planned for filming to start before the end of the year. Amy Pascal joined the producing group in March 2015, while Diablo Cody was brought on to rework the screenplay for the film. Later that year, Sony hired writers Lindsey Beer, Bert V. Royal, and Hillary Winston to revise the script once again.
Final contract talks for Ryan Gosling to play Ken in the movie started in September. It was announced that Gosling and the rest of the cast will appear in the first half of 2022. In March 2022, principal photography commenced at Warner Bros. Studios in Leavesden, England. Jacqueline Durran, who previously worked with Gerwig on Little Women, is the costume designer (2019).
